How much does social media management cost in South Africa?
In South Africa, social media management typically runs R3,000–R8,000 a month with a freelancer, R10,000–R25,000 a month with an agency, and higher for studio-level work that includes original video, photography and strategy.
The gap in those numbers is not greed — it is scope. A R3,000 retainer usually buys scheduling: someone takes photos you already have, writes captions and posts them. A R20,000 retainer usually buys production: original short-form video, photography, a content strategy tied to how you actually make money, and someone who reads the numbers each month and changes course.
The question worth asking is not what it costs, but what a month of silence costs you. If one new client is worth R15,000 to your business, a R10,000 retainer that reliably produces two is not an expense. If your average client is worth R900, the maths only works with volume — and you should be told that honestly before you sign anything.
What moves the price most: how much original filming and photography is needed, how many platforms you insist on being present on, whether paid ads are managed alongside organic, and whether anyone is responsible for replying to enquiries and turning them into bookings.
Our own view is that most businesses overpay for presence and underpay for positioning. Being posted everywhere is a tax. Being unmistakable on two channels is an asset.
